The Ballot is stronger than the Bullet — Abraham Lincoln

Tin soldiers N.R.A. comin’
right here in America
This winter I hear the drummin’
seventeen dead in Florida

Gotta get down to it
guns are cutting us down
shoulda been done long ago.
What if you knew her, and
found her dead on the ground?
How can you run when you know?

Tin soldiers N.R.A. comin’
right here in America
This winter I hear the drummin’
seventeen dead in Florida
twenty-six dead in Sandy Hook
nine dead in church in Charleston
twenty-six dead at church in Texas
thirteen dead in Columbine
fifty-eight dead in Las Vegas … how many more?

  1. They should simply ban the assault weapons, and for the rest, license them and make gun owners pass a competency test every four years, like we do with driver’s licenses.

  2. BTW, love the Kent State rewrite. Nice updating.

  3. Whoever has the gold makes the rules.

  4. typo (long -> lone)?
    I believe Neil’s lyric was
    “shoulda been done long ago.”

    [Response: Thanks, fixed.]

For today’s youth, this is their Viet Nam moment.

  6. It’s a sickening reality that we live in, but “I believe that change is going to come.” Cf., Sam Cooke, who put it yet more positively:

    And he was right.

  7. Barton,

There is one thing correlated with mass shootings: The number of guns. Your solution ignores this and will accomplish little. While assault weapons are used in the most shocking events, many more are killed with handguns, particularly minorities and inner city residents.

The total number of guns of all kinds not used as hunting weapons must come down, and assault weapons and semi-automatic handguns, if not all handguns, must be banned.

  8. Thanks for your opinion, perm. I’ll file it.
